Canto Bites: Flow Mosquito Rice
The other day a friend asked me if I knew 流蚊飯 lau6 man1 faan6.
Since we had just been talking about Canto versions of English words (a topic that never gets old), I stretched and stretched my brain to try to think of what it could be. No matter how much I thought, I couldn't think of any English word that sounded like that.
Finally, my friend asked me, "What do mosquitoes eat?"
Ohhhhhhhh. Lightbulb lit up in my head.
流 lau6 means flow, 蚊 man1 is mosquito, and 飯 faan6, of course, is rice. 飯 is often used as an all-around word for food. You don't just eat, you eat rice (although actually meaning food). You don't just cook, you cook rice (although it may be pizza).
A mosquito eats blood. "Bleed" is 流血 lau4 hyut3.
Soooooo.....there you go. Your Tuesday dose of cheesy Canto goodness.
