Canto Bites: Blow Water

Is it flu season? It sure seems like it, since people are dropping like flies around me. And unfortunately that includes me too. Yes, I've been cooped up in my house for the past few days sleeping and forcing myself to drink lots of liquid.

Since my brain still feels a bit like jiggly tofu, I'll keep this post short and sweet. The Canto word of the week is: 吹水 blow water (ceoi1 seoi2).

Now when I think of someone blowing water, it's usually either when someone says something absolutely outrageous or something hilarious right after you've taken a drink. Then there's no choice but to blow water over everyone. I may or may not have done that before.

That isn't exactly what this phrase is, though. In Cantonese, 吹水 means to chat. Shoot the breeze. Chew the fat. Enjoy a nice, leisurely talk.

I guess some people do spit a lot when they get excited, so it is fitting. I do like seeing people excited when they talk about things they love. But maybe, especially while I'm sick, I'll do it from a distance. Or at least bring a raincoat.
